About the Client
KIUMA is a large, rural Christian ministry complex in Southern Tanzania, housing approximately 1,000 people. It serves the surrounding community through a 160-bed hospital, schools, a vocational training centre, and other outreach programmes.
Project Challenge
After 20 years of rapid growth, the ministry’s water and electrical systems were inadequate to support the campus population and future expansion plans. The entire site was powered by diesel generators, and the infrastructure was undersized and inefficient, leading to concerns about operational capacity and safety.
MMM South Africa’s Involvement
MMM South Africa conducted the initial electrical assessment and site survey in 2014. Due to the size and scope of the required work, MMM recommended that Engineering Ministries International (EMI) provide the comprehensive design assistance for the full project.
Technical disciplines involved
The EMI design team provided a multi-disciplinary effort involving expertise in:
- Architectural Master Planning
- Civil Engineering (water distribution, wastewater, and biogas systems)
- Electrical Engineering (power generation, overhead distribution, and load analysis)
Key result, learning or implementation outcome
EMI delivered a comprehensive Design Report with a long-term master plan for the entire campus. This provided KIUMA with a clear roadmap for upgrading its infrastructure, including a complete redesign of the electrical system, recommendations for the water and wastewater networks, and a strategic plan for future growth that is both safe and sustainable.
