About the Client
An educare (crèche) program run in partnership with the non-profit organization “The Unlimited Child.”
Project Challenge
The existing crèche operated from a single, small classroom with very basic facilities, which was inadequate for its needs. The primary partner, The Unlimited Child, had the vision to build a new facility but lacked the technical know-how for construction project management. The immediate challenge was to conduct the necessary preliminary assessments (site survey, soil tests, engineering review) to create an accurate project plan and budget, as the initial available funding of R100,000 was estimated to be insufficient.
MMM South Africa’s Involvement
MMM South Africa acted as the primary project facilitator and manager. It provided the construction expertise that The Unlimited Child lacked, overseeing the project from initial planning and professional assessments through to the completion of the build.
Technical disciplines involved
The project proposal identified the need for several key technical disciplines:
- Site Surveying and Detailed Drawing
- Geotechnical Engineering (Soil Testing)
- Civil Engineering (for site assessment, water run-off, and erosion control)
- Architectural Design
- Construction Project Management
Key result, learning or implementation outcome
The key outcome of this proposal was the establishment of a clear, multi-step preliminary phase required before construction could begin. It identified that a successful build was contingent on first securing professional site assessments, detailed drawings, and an engineering review to mitigate risks and develop an accurate budget. The proposal effectively shifted the focus from immediate construction to essential due diligence, outlining a realistic project timeframe of 1-3 years and formalizing the need for a partnership to cover project management costs.
Outcome
The project delivered a well-built educare facility that was completed on time, within budget and fit for its intended purpose.
